This is a working supervisory position performing a variety of complex mechanical and maintenance tasks in the Fleet Maintenance division of the Facilities, Fleet & Emergency Services. Supervise a staff of mechanics and be responsible for the maintenance and repairs of a diverse fleet of Douglas County.

Responsible for the maintenance and repair of all vehicles and equipment assigned to shop location and all other Douglas County equipment.
Implements and monitors a preventative maintenance program to assure cost effective maintenance and a scheduled maintenance program to provide maintenance by manufacturers specifications.
Maintains a complete inventory system through FASTER and recording of all expenditures, maintenance equipment, fuel, repair parts, supplies, etc.
Monitors user departments by analysis of vehicle and equipment utilization through FASTER to maintain proper maintenance program.
Implements and maintains a mechanic training and certification program to provide needed technical skills for mechanics to stay current on industry repair standards.
Enforces County safety practices and procedures and ensures employees receive safety training.
Supervise all Fleet Services employees, trains, evaluates and disciplines employees.
Supervise staff to ensure principles and standards are upheld to the department.
Assist in the development of the Fleet Services budget to include review of past budget and forecasting needs for future budgets.
Assist Fleet Services and departments with the development of specifications for vehicles and equipment to be used by Douglas County.
Examines work orders and reports for accuracy and completeness on each repair request.
Keeps maintenance and repair records up to date in FASTER, performs preventative maintenance on all departmental vehicles and equipment, orders all parts for repairs.
Prepares and documents all annual inspections to include DOTS, and ensure proper filing of documents.
Initiates and tracks warranty claims.
OTHER DUTIES: Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position acts as working supervisor over staff of 4-8 mechanics.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Receives general supervision from the Fleet Supervisor and Fleet Manager.
CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR: This is complex mechanical work maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing vehicles and equipment. Consequence of error may result in essential emergency equipment and employee down-time.
INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT: Must be able to make knowledgeable decisions independently to ensure all operational needs are met. Must be able to make knowledgeable decisions supervising staff to principles and standards. Also consult with Fleet Manager and/or Facilities Director on higher level decisions.
CONTACTS: This position has daily contact with other employees.
EDUCATION: A high school diploma or GED supplemented by three years of auto/diesel mechanical education or experience. A combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Possession of, or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire, a valid Colorado CLASS A CDL drivers' license with no restrictions on automatic transmissions. Possession of, or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment: Air Pollution Control Division Diesel Fleet Self-Certification Program inspection card.
Incumbent must meet the Department of Transportation physical exam and drug and alcohol testing requirements.
EXPERIENCE: Three years' experience in supervision of a diverse fleet. Three years' experience with maintenance plans in a fleet management system. A combination of education and experience may be considered.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Tools typically used by a general mechanic must be provided by the incumbent. A tool allowance is provided.
The ability to successfully complete pre-employment screening that may include but is not limited to: reference checks, criminal background (including fingerprinting through a national database), motor vehicle record search, drug screen and physical is required.
Material and Equipment: Must provide a general set of tools to effectively make repairs to County vehicles and equipment.
Physical Demands: Must be able to perform strenuous physical labor for up to 8-10 hour each day and regularly lift 100 pounds. (Up to 12 hours during times of snow removal or construction). Work requires the ability to frequently lift and carry 50lbs. Work requires the ability to push and pull 100 lbs. frequently. Also requires frequent bending, squatting, standing, climbing, kneeling and walking. May be required to occasionally work in small, hard to reach spaces. May be required to pass a physical capabilities exam.
General Work Environment: Work is generally performed in the mechanic shop. Occasionally responds to service calls in the field.
BACKGROUND CHECK: This position will be required to submit to fingerprinting to be processed through a national database to determine criminal activities.
DRUG SCREENING: Must complete and pass pre-employment drug screening.
AVAILABILITY/ACCESSIBILITY: This position requires the incumbent to remain available via mobile cellular device/email access during and after normally scheduled business hours.
In the event of an emergency/disaster in or near the County, all County employees are expected to make every effort to be available to assist the County Manager, Elected/Appointed Officials and Department Directors to ensure the continued operation of any and all necessary County functions. This may mean being available to perform additional duties and hours beyond what is normally required. In the event that an exempt employee does work more than 40 hours a week in support of County operations during an emergency, such employee may receive overtime or other appropriate wage compensation in accordance with existing County policies or at the discretion of the County.
